Dear Member:

Cleaning up China’s astonishingly polluted waters is currently Greenpeace China’s most urgent and vital campaign. As one of our supporters, we would like to keep you update on this ambitious project.

China’s available per capita water resources are but one third of the global average, making it one of the twenty most water deficient countries in the world. To further exacerbate the situation, illegal dumping of untreated wastewater into public bodies of water has become a matter of course.

Today, water pollution is China’s most pressing environmental problem, threatening the lives of millions of ordinary people.

300 million people lack access to clean drinking water and over 70% of lakes and rivers are polluted!

Half of China’s underground water is severely polluted, while 30% of all freshwater sources can no longer be used. The main source of pollution is the industrial sector, which dumps as much as 40 to 60 billion tons of untreated wastewater every year while the local governments turn a blind eye.

What is most shocking is the double standard applied by many multinational corporations with operations in China. These corporations may actively disclose information about their sewage treatment within their home countries, but feel no need to do so in China.

Greenpeace is working with central and local government policy-makers to push for Environmental Information Disclosure and commit the ‘dirtiest’ companies to the strictest global water protection standards. We will get to the root of the problem by urging the government and corporations to adopt clean production, thus safeguarding the health of China’s environment and people.

water pollution Everyday, China’s people struggle to obtain just a clean glass of water to drink. They need your help now!

Solutions:
• Adopt clean production – Factories must be environmentally responsible in every stage of production, including the raw materials for their product, their production process, and the treatment of waste substances.
• Environmental Information Disclosure – increase the transparency of environmental policy making by encouraging public participation in the monitoring of environmental issues.

Our work:
• Lead investigations in areas severely affected by water pollution and expose major polluters.
• Promote awareness of water pollution by working with local governments and initiating community education projects.
• Encourage the strengthening and strict enforcement of legislation for industrial waste management.
• Demand Environmental Information Disclosure and clean production from industries.
