Dear Member,

Your continuing support helped us fund our latest opinion poll about the ¡°Public Attitude towards GE Foods¡±. This morning, we delivered the survey results at the Centre for Food Safety, Food and Environmental Hygiene Department. 96% of the HK public consider it their right to know whether the food they consume contains GE ingredients and 97% consider it the government¡¯s responsibility to immediately implement a mandatory GE Food labelling system. We handed the survey results to Dr. Philip Ho, Consultant of the Centre¡¯s Risk Assessment and Communication Division. Greenpeace urges the government to take immediate action to close the existing loopholes in GE food monitoring, and return to consumers their right to choose by urgently implementing a mandatory labelling system.

To make sure Dr. Ho got the message we replayed audio and video from street interviews with members of the public demanding protection from the unknown risks of GE Foods. Dr. Ho must heed the public clamour for mandatory labelling now.

HKSAR Government¡¯s voluntary GE Food labelling system fails
A Greenpeace investigation found GE ingredients present in all 7 tofu product samples tested.
In total, we screened over 800 pre-packaged food items and found none of them labelled as recommended by the HKSAR Government¡¯s Voluntary labelling System for GE Foods.
