December Campaign update:

Dear members,

Happy New Year, it's time to give you all the December campaign update, please see the following for what we¡¦ve been up to during this very busy last month of the year.

Bali Conference Update

The Bali Climate Change Conference closed on 15th December, what was the outcome and what does it mean?

The Bali road map ¡V The Bali Conference agreed to strengthen and to develop the Kyoto Protocol for it's second stage post 2012, to be agreed in Copenhagen in 2009. Developing countries agreed to take measurable, verifiable and reportable action and some agreements were reached regarding the transfer of clean technology to the developing world and for the provision of finance to those countries already suffering from the effects of climate change. However, agreements to reduce emissions from deforestation, which account for about 20% of global emissions, still have a long way to go and a loophole remains that may allow some industrialised countries to swap binding emissions reduction targets for voluntary goals. Although the Bali result is far from perfect, at least there was global consensus, including for the first time from the US, to strengthen the Kyoto Protocol. It is important that we all keep the pressure on for a strong second phase of Kyoto and for real action on climate change.

Humpback whales to be the spared the harpoon ¡V for now

The Japanese government has confirmed on the 21st December that they have abandoned plans to kill humpback whales in the Southern Ocean this season, a victory for Greenpeace supporters who have joined with us in demanding action from their governments and participated in our Great Whale Trail. But whaling has not ended because Japan still plans to kill fin and minke whales this year. Saving one species is not enough. We need to press Japan to abandon the whale hunt entirely and to stop the build of a new whaling factory ship, Nisshin Maru. Let¡¦s keep the pressure on to stop this unnecessary slaughter of these beautiful creatures. Follow the Great Whale Trail here.

Green Olympic

Greenpeace's "Go Green! Save a Million kWh of Electricity" summer 2007 campaign invited the public to take the first easy step to combat climate change by switching to energy saving light bulbs. The campaign has now moved to the mainland. On the 4th December, we organised a launch activity with the vice-presidents of Construction & Environment Department and Olympic Village Department (DengYaping) of the BOCOG. Deng will use of her influence as an athlete to promote the Green Olympics and the use of energy saving light bulbs. (In Chinese only)
