Mickey Cooks the Climate

Like other corporate giants, the Disney Group takes every opportunity to showcase its environmental credentials, both in its operations and its films. There is no doubt that Disney tries to minimise its environmental footprint. However, two weeks ago we caught them napping when we discovered that they are still using power crazy incandescent light bulbs in the huge chandeliers in the Disneyland Hong Kong Hotel lobby. To encourage Disney to make the switch, and to show them how easy it can be, we visited the Disneyland Hotel, carrying the message ¡§Mickey Cooks the Climate¡¨ and began changing the light bulbs for them on 26th August.
Changing light bulbs stops even more carbon dioxide (CO2) from going into our atmosphere and from adding to the climate crisis, it also saves money. If Disney continues the job we started and changes all 200 incandescent bulbs in the hotel lobby, they could stop over 90 tonnes of CO2 from cooking our climate. So, Disney, get those stepladders out now and make the switch!
The HKSAR government, the theme park¡¦s largest shareholder, should legislate for energy wastage across the territory by banning incandescent light bulbs now.

2000 Rock for the Climate at Greenpeace China 10th Anniversary Concert
¡@
The PMPS Go Greenpeace Concert held on 21st August was the finale of a season of events to mark Greenpeace China¡¦s 10th Anniversary! Anthony Wong Yiu Ming, at 17 and other PMPS members, along with special guests including Wong Ka Keung, Kolar, Beijing rock band Catcher in the Rye and famous drama actor Joey Leung Jao Yiu, performed more than 20 songs to express their feelings about climate change and to lead the crowd of 2000 down the road of environmental protection.
We believe that development should not come at the expense of the environment. For the last decade, Greenpeace has been committed to seeking and building a green growth pattern for China. Our vision for a sustainable future can only be realised if we continue to inspire and engage more of the public to sign-up for positive change. This could not be achieved without your great support and participation!

Great Success ¡V Green Discussion! |

|
|

About 80 people from green groups and academia joined our ¡¥Green Discussion¡¦ on 25th August 2007 which attempted to review the experiences of Hong Kong ¡¥s environmental movement over the past decade as well as to propose ways and strategies to respond to the growing environmental challenges in the coming ten years.
The Discussion was very dynamics and participants offered valuable views on the topics. As pointed out by S.P. Lo, Greenpeace China Campaign and Communications Director, HK¡¦s environmental movement should consider the wider implications for the mainland and the global environment. It was crucial for green groups and interested parties to have more interaction and shared values, so as to strengthen the movement, influence policy agendas and social values at large.
A summary of the Green Discussion will be published on our website in due course. Please look out for it!

Shoppers¡¦ Guide to avoiding GE Food 2007 (Mainland Version) |

|
|
|
¡@Earlier this month we launched the 3rd annual mainland China edition of our ¡§Shoppers¡¦ Guide to Avoiding GE Food 2007¡¨, in Beijing and Guangzhou, based on commitments made by various food brands to use only non-GE (genetically engineered) ingredients in their products for the Chinese market. We began publication of the Shoppers¡¦ Guide in mainland China in 2004 to give consumers the right to know what¡¦s in their food and the right to choose. In the beginning only 36 food brands committed to going GE-free, while this year sees 139 food brands making commitments. The latest guide includes GE-free commitments from Glico, Metro & PepsiCo, while Kraft and Heinz reaffirmed their commitments that they are not using any other GE ingredients in the products sold in China.
As most of Hong Kong¡¦s food is imported, with the majority coming from mainland China, Greenpeace conducts irregular tests for GE contamination to ensure food safety. With more commitments made by the food producers and the implementation of the labeling system, consumers¡¦ rights and food safety are improving. The Shoppers¡¦ Guide (Hong Kong version) will be published in December, please stay tuned!

600 strip naked on glacier in global warming protest |

|
|
|
¡@ ¡@
Global warming is stripping away our glaciers and leaving our entire planet vulnerable to extreme weather, floods, sea-level rise, global decreases in carrying capacity and agricultural production, fresh water shortages, disease and mass human dislocations. On 18th August, six hundred people shed their clothes on a glacier in the Swiss Alps to bodily cry out for help against a planetary emergency: Global Warming. Known around the world for his installations, Spencer Tunick wanted people to know that global climate change is not an abstract issue, but a hazardous threat which affects all of us!
Over the last 150 years, alpine glaciers have reduced in size by approximately one third of their surface area and this melting is accelerating. If the global warming continues at its current rate, most glaciers in Switzerland will completely disappear by 2080. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) the world only has eight years remaining to take the urgent action needed to curb catastrophic climate change. Without swift action, the damage could become irreversible.
Climate change now requires fast and courageous political decisions to radically cut green-house gas emissions and stabilise global warming. Governments around the world must know that the people they represent expect and demand them to take action.
What are you doing? You don't need to get naked on a glacier to be part of the energy [r]evolution. You can sign up for the Greenpeace Seven Steps campaign
and start easy: with simple ways to improve your energy efficiency.
