April Update

Greenpeace and community activists condemn 'Climate Killer' CLP at AGM

¡@¡@CLP¡¦s CO2 emissions in 2006 were the highest in 14 years and the social and environmental costs of their activities across the region rose to HK$ 30.8 billion, yet CLP continue to overlook the true cost of coal. 20 Greenpeace activists and climate change and coal victims from the Philippines, Tuvalu and Australia blockaded entrances at the AGM venue, enacting scenes of the climate devastation already being caused by CLP¡¦s record levels of CO2 emissions. Activists lay in front of 9 huge tombstones to symbolise the human cost of CLP¡¦s activities across the Asia-Pacific.

¡@¡@Taukiei Kitara, the representative from the sea-level rise threatened Pacific island of Tuvalu said, ¡§Our home will be gone in a matter of decades, there are already plans to evacuate all Tuvalu residents. CLP is the largest privately owned power utility in the Asia-Pacific region, and makes huge profits, but we are suffering the impacts of climate change caused by companies like CLP¡¨

Greenpeace pushes the HK government for a food safety legislation timetable

¡@¡@It has been a year since we first exposed toxic pesticide found in vegetables, but citizens are still at risk due to lax regulations. On April 12, we again discovered that vegetables contaminated by toxic pesticides could still be found in local markets. In addition, we also found that the Man Kam To Food Control Office exaggerate the vegetable inspection figures. The evidence proves that the monitoring system has not been improved since last year. Together with the fruit and vegetables industry, consumer groups and community representatives, Greenpeace issued a joint statement urging the Government to speed up the legislation on Hong Kong imports of fruit and vegetables.

¡@¡@On 16th April, Greenpeace activists occupied the lift lobby of Central's Murray Building, the headquarters of the Health, Welfare and Food Bureau to urge them to announce a timetable for the Food Safety Law to be enacted in 2007-2008. We also demanded that fruit and vegetable monitoring should be included once the Law enters into effect. Following our 7-hour sit-in, the Bureau agreed to meet most of our demands.

Lenovo leaps to the top of Greenpeace¡¦s Guide to Greener Electronics, while Apple is in last place

¡@¡@Last year we launched the ¡¥Greenpeace Guide to Greener Electronics¡¦ to encourage electronic companies to become ¡§greener¡¨ by phasing out the use of toxic chemicals in their products. The guide is updated every three months. The latest edition shows Chinese PC maker Lenovo in the top position, displacing Nokia from the lead it had maintained since the Guide was launched.

¡@¡@Sony and LG Electronics receive penalty points for operating double standards on their e-waste takeback policies across the world, losing their places in the top five, while Apple, having made no progress since the launch of the Guide in August 2006, continue to languish in last place, far behind all other major manufacturers. After the latest guide was launched, Lenovo sent out a press release of its own, which shows how much companies care about this ranking.

Merbau is in crisis due to rampant illegal logging

¡@¡@Merbau is a kind of precious hardwood found in the Paradise Forests, it grows only 1-5 seedlings in each hectare of ancient forests and takes 80 years to mature. Merbau is a premium quality wood used for wood flooring and furniture.

¡@¡@Earlier this month, we released a report "Merbau's Last Stand - How Industrial Logging is Driving the Destruction of the Paradise Forests of Asia Pacific". The report documents how illegal logging is wiping out Merbau and the ancient forests where it grows.

It¡¦s Our 10th Anniversary

¡@¡@It¡¦s Greenpeace China¡¦s 10th Anniversary this year. On 21st April, we held an anniversary party with ex-staff, colleagues, members and guests to mark the occasion and to report our work progress and fundraising results.

¡@¡@Over 200 of you joined our party. People like you are our driving force for a better future. Through our ¡§10 achievements¡¨ photo exhibition, we reviewed our 10 most important victories over the past decade. We also designed an ¡§Action area¡¨ to demonstrate our action preparations including props and equipment, and to explain the purpose and process of ¡§Non-Violent Direct Action¡¨. We enjoyed organic fusion food, and with special thanks to our member, Rachael Yau, enjoyed 2 very tasty non-GE birthday cakes which she had baked especially.

¡@¡@In 10 years we¡¦ve developed from a small office in Hong Kong into one of the most highly visible NGOs in China. This would not have been possible without your support. We look forward to the next decade and beyond, a better future and to continuing to work together with you.
