March Update

Greenpeace exposes more APP forest destruction

¡@¡@Recent investigations by Greenpeace China have shown that APP have again broken China¡¦s State Forestry Law by destroying a natural forest area in Hainan. The area destroyed was the core area of a new national reserve, Yinggeling. Once they had cleared the area, APP planted eucalyptus trees. APP¡¦s illegal activities threaten the local biodiversity and damage the local environment. It is our hope that the State Forestry Administration (SFA) and State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA) will act respectively to stop APP¡¦s activities. We also call on APP to stop their plan to transform natural forests to artificial forests.

HK Lawmakers join Greenpeace demand for government action on climate change

¡@¡@The run up to Donald Tsang¡¦s inevitable reelection as Chief Executive gave both candidates an opportunity to demonstrate their vision for Hong Kong. Shockingly, neither candidate addressed the critical issue of climate change. Greenpeace China organised a ¡§Vote for Climate" to consolidate support from lawmakers in Hong Kong ahead of the Chief Executive election. Our campaign to push the two candidates to address what measures Hong Kong needs to adopt to belatedly join the global battle against climate change, gained the support of over half of LegCo members on March 22nd, from across the political spectrum.

¡@¡@The lawmakers pledged to push for Hong Kong to devise a climate change policy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect the earth from climate change. Urgent action is required to set caps for greenhouse gas emissions, to set emission controls for power plants, to enable the massive development of clean, renewable energy and to drastically increase energy efficiency.

¡@¡@We joined hands with 11 other green groups on March 12th to urge the government to put the sustainable development of the territory at the top of their agenda. Although, none of the groups are opposed to economic development, there is strong criticism of the government for pursuing a ¡¥development at all costs¡¦ model. Hong Kong should live up to its claim to be Asia¡¦s World City and fall into line with international trends by urgently enshrining sustainable development into future policies, particularly policies to address climate change.

Change your ticket, not the climate

¡@¡@A new campaign from Greenpeace UK is targeting British Airway¡¦s opening of a new unnecessary domestic route. Greenpeace offered passengers queuing for BA's first domestic flight between London Gatwick and Newquay, the chance to exchange their plane tickets for climate-friendly train tickets. BA's new domestic route isn't just irresponsible given what we know about climate change - it's also completely unnecessary. If you take into account the time and cost of travel to airports and checking in, travelling by plane works out to be more expensive than train, only a little quicker and ten times more damaging to the climate.

What you can do:
Write to British Airways Chief Executive Willie Walsh and ask the airline to show genuine leadership and responsibility in stabilising CO2 emissions from aviation.
