Food safety: Highly toxic pesticide detected in tangerines and strawberries
¡@¡@The approach of Lunar New Year means it¡¦s time for us all to collect fruits and candies in readiness for our annual round of visits to friends and relatives to celebrate the festival. Knowing that some of the fruits traditionally given as gifts at Lunar New Year were hazardous to our health would definitely dampen our festival mood? We first detected dangerous levels of pesticides in vegetables and fruits on April 2006 in Guangzhou and Hong Kong respectively. We have been tracking the supermarket¡¦s and government¡¦s monitoring to ensure food safety for consumers ever since. More information

More food manufacturers join the ¡§GE-free¡¨ crusade
¡@¡@Fruits and vegetables contaminated with excessive amounts of pesticide are a threat to our health. The same is also true of food containing genetically engineered ingredients. Our GE food campaigning efforts over the years have resulted in several hundreds food producers in both Mainland China and Hong Kong committing to using no GE ingredients in their products. A further five food producers from the Mainland recently joined the list. More information |

International News: Endangered Whales - Hunted, Stockpiled and Left to Rot on a Rubbish Dump
¡@¡@In late 2006 a single whaler, given a commercial license by the Icelandic government, hunted and killed seven fin whales. This caused huge public and political controversy, both in Iceland and internationally.
¡@¡@Now, some of our activists in Iceland have been hard at work, discovering almost 200 tonnes of meat and blubber from endangered fin whales still in storage - awaiting tests for chemical contamination. Our ship, The Esperanza, will shortly depart Auckland, New Zealand, to defend the whales in the freezing waters of the Southern Ocean against Japan¡¦s whaling fleet.
