¡@¡@As we step into 2007, Greenpeace faces many ongoing challenges in its¡¦global campaigns to safeguard our environment and our future. Greenpeace acts to change attitude and behaviours in order to protect and conserve the environment and promote peace.
We have to continue to show the way: change is possible! We wanted to give you a sneak preview of our main areas of work this year, so the next time you hear about one of our activities on the news or from us, you will know what it¡¦s all about and can get involved.

¡@¡@Addressing the main environmental threat ¡V climate change ¡V will remain our top priority. Greenpeace is asking you to take part in an energy revolution - to go for renewable energy. We will be publishing the ¡¥Greenpeace Global Energy Scenario¡¦ to show that we need a fundamental change in the way that we produce and use energy, to begin to slow global warming. We will be highlighting impacts on global climate and local communities in the Himalayas, in the Ganges basin and in Brazil and identifying coal as an obstruction to the Energy Revolution.
¡@¡@In China and Hong Kong we will focus on the link between climate change and fossil fuels, and the solutions - renewable energy and energy efficiency. We will maintain the pressure on CLP to commit to emissions reduction targets, continue to promote the development and use of Guangdong¡¦s large wind resources and will document and publicise the unacceptable costs of coal power. In addition we will continue to push the HK government for concrete action on Air Pollution by revising the very outdated and inaccurate Air Quality Objective. We will also be urging Hong Kong-owned factories in Guangdong to clean up their acts.

Develop Sustainable Agriculture
¡@¡@We will highlight the real impacts of industrial agriculture ¡V from conversion of precious lands, water pollution through the use of agrochemicals to GE contamination. We will continue our campaign to keep GE Rice out of Asia and GE Maize out of Europe.
¡@¡@In China and Hong Kong we will maintain pressure on supermarkets and food producers to make or to uphold their non-GE commitments. In Hong Kong we will maintain the pressure on the HK government to monitor pesticides in vegetables, and in Guangdong, we will work with the authorities to target illegal pesticide production. To help create a new market segment for local organic produce, regular farmers markets will continue in Hong Kong until April.

¡@¡@This year we will continue our campaign to protect the Paradise Forests of South-east Asia, highlight the impacts of forest destruction in Congo and target unsustainable forest practices in Canada and the US. After helping to secure a two-year logging moratorium in the heart of the Amazon forest in 2006 we will be working to secure the ¡¥building of a strong Amazon green wall¡¦ through employment of a strong set of measures, which will have to result in long-lasting forest.
¡@¡@In China we will work focus on the home furnishing retail sector to ensure that it fulfils its commitments to eliminate the supply and use of illegally logged timber. We will also be ¡¥naming and shaming¡¦ companies that refuse to commit to an ancient forest friendly purchasing policy.

Eliminate Toxic Chemicals
¡@¡@The focus of our campaign for a Toxic-Free Future will be working with those committed companies to ensure that they meet their commitments and will continue to challenge the iconic, creative Apple brand to be green. In China we will monitor the commitments that Acer, Dell, and Lenovo (more thatn 25% of the global computer market), made to phase out hazardous chemicals throughout the life cycle of their products and to take full responsibility for their end-of-life products. We will also begin to gather information on water pollution in China.

¡@¡@It is a major campaign for Greenpeace globally this year - Defending our Oceans. Our year-long ¡¥Defending our Oceans expedition¡¦ raised awareness about the wide range of threats destroying this unique ecosystem, in 2007 we will be promoting the strong, lasting changes which will result in sustainable use of our ocean resources. At the end of January 2007 we will again be confronting the Japanese whaling fleet in the Southern Oceans. Whales have no economic value, and we cannot afford a return to the mass exploitation of these beautiful creatures from commercial whaling in the 19th and 20th centuries.
